Dear Students and Applicants,

below you can find the key dates and deadlines for the coming academic year. The full, official version will appear on the university's main website under this link but here we present the most crucial information in a more concise format.

Academic year 2023/2024

The academic year begins on October 1, 2023 and runs through September 30, 2024. The following academic calendar applies to all full-time students of all programmes and also part-time students of veterinary medicine.

Winter semester 

Duration: October 1, 2023 - February 22, 2024.

Class period: October 3, 2023 - February 5, 2024

Exam session: February 7 - 20, 2024.

Only exams will take place during the exam session, not regular classes. The exact date for each exam will be announced closer to the end of the semester. In some cases it is possible to sit one or more exams before the start of the exam session. Students are free to go as soon as they are done with all necessary exams.

USOS student system closes on: February 21, 2024, 11:59 pm [by this time you need all your final grades to be in the system, check if they have been entered! If not, contact your Dean's Office and the appropriate lecturer immediately.]

Registration for classes: October 2, 2023, additional date: October 5, 2023.

Students will have to manually register for classes in certain subjects (e.g. foreign languages, physical education, social sciences, including Academic Entrepreneurship and Innovation). Does not apply to first semester students of bachelor's degrees and veterinary medicine.

Holidays:

October 30 - November 3, 2023 (Monday - Friday) - All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day

December 23, 2023 - January 7, 2024 - Winter holidays

February 21, 2024 - February 29, 2024 – semester break

Holidays last for the whole indicated period, including the first and last day listed above, e.g.  for the semester break, the first day off is the 21st of February, and the last day off is 29th February.

Important dates at the beginning of the semester

October 1 - formal start of the winter semester; default move-in day at the dormitories

October 2 - Welcome Day (on campus, attendance mandatory!)

October 3- official inauguration of the academic year (no classes, event not compulsory)

October 4 – first day of class (on campus, attendance mandatory!)

Notes:

On February 6, 2024 (Tuesday) classes are held according to the timetable as on the day of the official inauguration

The timetables are swapped to make up for classes lost because they happen to fall on additional days off. The Dean can set additional dates if necessary, also during examination sessions. The overall balance of all classes is kept to ensure that all subjects get enough class time to complete all of their planned learning outcomes. The Dean can set additional dates for making up for lost class days if necessary, also during examination sessions. 

Summer semester

Duration: March 1, 2024 - September 30, 2024

Class period: March 4, 2024 - June 26, 2024

Exam session: June 27, 2024 - July 10, 2024 [regular session], September 2, 2024. - September 13, 2024 [retake session].

Exams will take place during this period, students are free to go when they are done with all their exams. In some cases it is possible to sit one or more exams before the start of the exam session. For those who need it, the second attempt at a failed exam will take place in the September retake session.

USOS system closes on:  September 18, 2024, 11:59 p.m. [all your final grades need to be entered before this deadline]

Registration for classes: March 1, 2023, additional date: March 4, 2023.

Students will have to manually register for classes in certain subjects (e.g. foreign languages, physical education, social sciences, including Academic Entrepreneurship and Innovation). 

Holidays:

March 29 - April 2, 2024 - Spring holidays

May 1 - May 3, 2024 (Wednesday-Friday) – Labour Day, Constitution Day

May 30 - May 31, 2024 (Thursday-Friday) – Corpus Christi

Notes:

On 29 May 2024 (Wednesday) classes are held according to the Friday timetable,

On 24 June 2024 (Monday) classes are held according to the Friday timetable,

On 25 June 2024 (Tuesday) classes are held according to the Thursday timetable,

The Dean can set additional dates if necessary, also during examination sessions.
